Various organizing positions - Avaaz (various locations)
Avaaz.org is a new global web movement with a simple democratic mission: to close the gap between the world we have, and the world most people everywhere want. Avaaz is hiring 2 Campaign Directors, a Chief Operating Officer/Operations Director, and Campaigners.
Avaaz has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last 3 years, rapidly becoming the largest global web movement in history. Our membership is at 4 million and climbing fast. Members have taken over 15 million actions, told over 55 million friends, donated $10 million online, and organised almost 10,000 rallies and events in every country of the world. The initial vision of Avaaz of a truly global, multilingual, multi-issue, committed movement of citizens that can rapidly mobilize effective democratic pressure on governments all over the planet -- has been realized.
But as we head into 2010, our team is more taken with a sense of possibility than of accomplishment. We feel weve just scratched the surface of whats possible with Avaaz, and were looking for a few absolutely outstanding individuals to join us and help us find out just how far our story goes.
Candidates will be joining a world class team -- stuffed with inspired public entrepreneurs and brilliant campaigners who are also a sheer pleasure to work with. We feel its the match of this kind of team with our incredible global membership that is at the core of what Avaaz has to offer the world.
Were headed for a total staff size of 32 with 5 part time. We dont care so much about CVs or years of experience. Our criteria for hiring are:
1. All-star. Extremely smart, and talented in all or some of strategy, communication, organizing, management.
2. Thoroughly committed, and hungry to deliver results and make a difference
3. Highly professional, no drama, a pleasure to work with
4. A very fast learner (particularly if seeking to take on an unfamiliar role)
5. A globalist, possessing a strong global perspective, experience and values
In our experience, we find great people by asking other great people. Again, it doesnt matter how many years of experience candidates have or whether theyve done very similar work. They might come from politics, media, NGOs or it might be industry, education or science.
All of you are committed to social change, and wed ask that you take a few moments to consider this in that light the right person at Avaaz can really make a difference in the world. All of you have either been extremely helpful to Avaaz senior staff or the organisation in the past, and just a few moments of your time could literally make years of difference to us and our work on the issues we all care about.
The specific roles we are hiring for are (in no particular order):
Campaign Director an all-purpose senior staff member at the core of our team who can handle just about any challenge but typically works on figuring out how millions of people can impact on a pressing global problem and making it happen. This job is for a true globalist, and requires extraordinary creativity, strategic thinking, policy savvy, project and staff management capability, and excellent spoken and written communications skills. Its also very satisfying to wake up every morning, read the paper, and have the immediate opportunity to impact any issue in the world. In 2010, we are particularly keen to explore growth opportunities, to see whether there is a whole new level of size and scale that our community could move to.
Campaign Director (Actions) this is an extremely unusual role that will be a dream job for the right person. Avaaz campaigns all over the world, but to allow our members to make an impact online we often need to mount complex operations offline. This could be anything from a simple petition delivery to a high level official in Brussels, to running a ship into Burma to deliver aid, to putting together a human rights surveillance program in Zimbabwe, to coordinating an investigative reporting team on pirates in Somalia. This person must be thoroughly mobile and able to travel and live anywhere at any time, indefatigable, endlessly creative and determined, have strong practical skills, and be willing to face risk.
Campaign Director (Communications) weve focused more on building our community and our impact than our brand so far, but we do have a very strong brand in some countries with patchy awareness globally and we feel its time for it to arrive in a big way - we want Avaaz to be a household name that conjures up an image of a global community of millions of citizens who believe in and are taking positive action towards a better world. This one of our top two challenges for 2010, and were looking for someone who knows the global media inside out and can take it on.
Chief Operating Officer/Operations Director this role forms the backbone of our organization, covering finance, administration, human resources, legal and logistical needs. As we grow and take on more complex challenges, having extremely thorough, methodical, creative and flexible leadership in this role is critical to our success.
Campaigners campaigners are hard-working, creative, tech savvy and exceptional people who assist Campaign Directors in building and running campaigns. They may be just out of university or graduate school or a few years out, and they are looking for a work experience where they can make a difference, learn from some outstanding managers, and do the hard and sometimes pressing work of getting campaigns up and running online and in multiple languages and making sure theyre delivered in a way that makes an impact. We are particularly interested in campaigner candidates from Africa and Asia or native speakers of Italian, German, and Japanese. Ability to travel frequently and direct action skills that support the Campaign Director (Actions) are a plus but not a requirement.
To apply, please e-mail Alice Jay at alice -at- avaaz.org.
